Standard T8 Halophosphate Fluorescent Lighting Tubes become obsolete! PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 July 2010 14:30

Lighting20banner

New European Legislation came into force on the 13th April 2010 in an attempt to improve the environmental performance of lighting. As a result, the old T8 Halophosphate Fluorescent Tubes  have become obsolete and are therefore becoming increasingly difficult to source.

Thankfully, Rail Order has done the hard work for you! We have 3 available options to cater for the phase out of the current standard T8 halophosphate lamps covering all applications throughout the Rail Inudstry. They require no special fittings, ballasts or control gear and are in colour options Warm White, Cool White and White. Please click here to see our previous newsletter and options available.

Safeglass Promotion 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Striving to improve Safety in the Rail Industry!

(Safeglass® Emergency Door Release)

Safeglass® is used throughout the Rail Industry as a replacement for traditional, toughened and theatrical glass. It is used because of its abilities to dramatically improve safety to passengers and staff by it being safer to break (and clean up) in an emergency. It is also better quality and more reliable than other 'safe' break glass products such as sugar and theatrical glass.

Common Safeglass® Uses:

Hammer box covers, Emergency door release covers, Tool box covers, Emergency equipment covers and many other safety products.

Rail Specific Products

Working alongside Safeglass®, Rail Order can supply numerous Safeglass® alternatives for existing ‘Break Glass’ products. All Safeglass® products adhere to the relevant Railway Group Standards. Our Safeglass® product range includes TIS Seals and Break Glass Alternatives.

TIS Seals

Throughout the Rail Industry, these seals are used to protect switches from accidental activation or as ‘tell-tales’ to show that there may have been a fault or that they had been tampered with. Safeglass® tubing was developed specifically for customers who needed a safe, reliable solution. Originally they were made from glass and staff had reported injury when breaking them.

The Brief: To redesign the part so that it was easier and safer to break than the original glass part. The part consists of 2 sections – a tube and a collar that is glued to one end of the tube.

The Solution: Several TOCs were involved in the project to discuss how the original design could be improved. Once the design was agreed, processes were carried out to alter the part in order to conform to Railway Group Standards.

The Result: The basic shape of the seal is similar to the original. To assist breaking, there is a groove cut into the tube section which weakens it only when force is applied to break it. Both sections are supplied in an individual bag to keep them together and prevent damage during storage. Many train companies are using the new seal and have seen improvements in safety.

Rail Order can supply the Safeglass® version 098/071936 (replacing BR Parts 098/015717, 015/005154 & 098/015748)

Break Glass Replacements

We can supply Safeglass® products for all of your ‘Non Glazing’ requirements. Our Safeglass® options are retrofit replacements to the existing normal break glasses and provide the same clarity. Safeglass® alternatives are cleaner to break and stronger (therefore easier to fit and replace) than current theatrical and sugar glasses. Please find below some of our options:

  • 009/101034 Emergency Break Glass (Replaces 015/070820) 94 x 94 x 2
  • 009/101036 Emergency Break Glass (Replaces 015/070822) 115 x 83 x 2

Linear Fluorescent T8 Halophosphate Phase Out

From 13 April 2010, new European regulations will apply to fluorescent lamps. These regulations are part of a programme to improve the environmental performance of lighting and reduce energy consumption by 20% over the next 10 years. T8 halophosphate lamps do not meet these new standards, and as such the manufacture of these tubes has now been withdrawn.

Rail Order has 3 available options to cater for the phase out of the current standard T8 halophosphate lamps. They require no special fittings, ballasts or control gear and are in colour options Warm White, Cool White and White. Other colour options may be available upon request.

Please find our upgrade options and for more information / order placement, please don't hesitate to contact your Account Manager or our Sales Team on Tel: +44 (0) 1623 862431.
